One of the main activities undertaken by the European Action COST ES0803 ÒDeveloping Space Weather Products and Services in EuropeÓ involves the systematic validation of space weather research and operational models (www.costes0803.noa.gr). Significant results of this effort were presented in the COST ES0803 Workshop on Assessment and Validation of Space Weather Models that was held on 16-17 March, 2011 in Alcala, Spain (http://www.spaceweather.es/cost/home.html). This splinter session aims to accommodate new advances on this topic, but also to discuss the potential exploitation of the validation results for the upgrade and the operational implementation of existing space weather models, as well as the online demonstration of their accuracy.
