Main problem in EIT wave detection:

The main difficulty in the EIT wave detection  method development comes from the complex and diverse properties of the EIT waves, which are not totally known and make it difficult to define simply the EIT wave. A consequence of this is the standard pattern recognition or automatic control, such as methods developed for tracking solid objects, do not apply, and that regular properties of EIT waves must identified which can be used be a specifically tailored method.

For instance, events associated to detection of CMEs and related phenomena require different recognition and tracking methods, as reviewed by E. Robbrecht and D. Berghmans, 'Entering the era of automated CME recognition: a review of existing tools' (more).
