MAJOR FLARE OCCURRED-PROTON EVENT IN PROGRESS
 NOAA AR 1402
produced a X1.7 flare on Jan. 27 peaking at 1837 UT. A proton event is
in progress for protons from 10 to 50 Mev. 100 MeV protons flux is close
to the threshold and might cross it within few hours. A halo has been
observed with LASCO and COR2 coronagraphs (~1900 km/s on COR2 A). Due to
the position of the AR, close to the limb, it is, at the moment,
expected that the bulk of the CME will miss the Earth.
